November always means one thing in the Busman`s calendar and not just fireworks my dear chums. No it is time for the annual excursion to the National Exhibition Centre and the trip to Hall number 5 for the get together that is the UK Bus and Coach show.

It is always good fun to rock up and just see which old chums you are going to bump into and also to meet new chums, for the last five years I have attended all three days of the show as we have been able to have a stand from CILT which has proven to be an excellent source of recruitment .However this year funds being a bit tight we were unable to oblige so I took it upon myself to turn up on the last day of the show which was the Thursday.

Last day or not it was still very busy and it was great to see so many exhibitors and operators milling around doing deals and generally keeping the wheels of commerce turning. It is also nice when as you turn a corner you spot old friends and invariably pop off for a coffee and a catch up.

I managed to bump into a lot of good people and as a direct result of turning up I managed to secure a new recruitment contract for drivers, as well as promote two projects for uTrack and get invited to join a reunion club for former National Bus Company senior Managers and Directors.Fittingly it was a little club that my dear old dad was originally involved in setting up,so the wheel has gone full circle in effect.

One of the best bits of the show is the black tie Route One Awards event which is held at the national Motor bike Museum next to the NEC where this year I was delighted to note that my good chums Martjin Gilbert and John Bickerton the CEO and Engineering Directors of the excellent Reading Buses, were both worthy winners. But, the big prize went to the super team at Nottingham City Transport who were crowned as the UK best Bus Company.Mark Fowles the CEO and I were both NBC senior management trainees together and it is really good to see him and his team get the recognition that they deserve.

So,if you have anything what so ever to do  with the UK Bus and Coach Industries make sure that you are at the NEC next year it really is a great and worth while event to be at so that you can both see the latest and the best that this great industry has to offer, and that you can meet great people.
